Elise Demuynck (b. 1990, Antwerp) is a Belgian visual artist and art director based in Amsterdam. She studied Visual Arts, specialising in Advertising Design, at Sint Lucas Antwerp.

Her background in both graphic design and visual art informs her approach to composition, form and visual language. Her multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculptural objects and woodwork.

artist statement

My artistic practice follows one rule: blue must always be present. Everything else is open to question, from the materials I work with to the roles we expect them to play.

Inspired by Yves Klein, I am fascinated by the versatility of this particular colour. Although blue is often perceived as safe and familiar, the shade I work with is bold and outspoken. Its character shifts depending on its surroundings. On its own, it demands attention; alongside the warmth of wood, it takes on an entirely different presence.

That same interest in shifting perceptions runs through my approach to materials. Moving between painting and sculptural forms, I use material play to look at familiar things differently. Industrial metal mesh can take on an unexpected softness when shaped and unravelled, while a wooden frame can become the starting point for a painting rather than its finishing touch. I enjoy questioning what materials and objects are supposed to be, and discovering what else they might become.

Play is central to this process. I believe playfulness is not something we outgrow, but something we forget. Somewhere along the way, we trade curiosity for control. In my work, I try to reverse that, approaching materials without a fixed outcome in mind and allowing unexpected ideas to take shape.

By keeping one colour constant, I give myself the freedom to question everything else. This self-imposed constraint becomes a catalyst for material exploration.
